How to read an MLB pitching matchup
OddsShift · Jun 29, 2026
If you only check one thing before an MLB game, make it the starting pitchers. No single factor moves a baseball game more.
Start with the obvious: ERA and WHIP tell you how many runners a pitcher allows. But dig one level deeper. Strikeout rate tells you how often he misses bats — high-K arms are more matchup-proof. Recent form matters too: a pitcher on a cold streak or coming off a short-rest start is a different bet than his season line suggests.
Then look at the bullpen behind him. A great starter handing off to a tired or thin bullpen in the 7th is where a lot of leads evaporate. The pitching matchup is not just two names — it is the whole staff.
